100 Ways to Live to Be 100 - Part 4

by joi on August 4, 2006

We’ve been mostly going through the Dos, so far, so let’s balance things out and talk about a few Don’ts. The experts….Thank God for experts….. have taken exception with the following, so don’t even think about doing them:

23. Don’t overuse salt. (ouch, I felt that one) We should limit our salt intake to 1 tsp. a day. Doing so will reduce our risk of heart disease and stroke. I’m trying to cut back on salting my foods, even though some - like tomatoes and watermelon scream for it. My biggest downfalls are popcorn and Diet Dr. Pepper. I’m a Movie fanatic, and watching one without buttery, salty popcorn and a tall diet drink is darned near unheard of. The last time my daughters and I watched a dvd (The Hills Have Eyes - LOVED IT!), I actually started off with Iced Green tea and Triscuits. It wasn’t long before…..midway between screams, I was like, “Pause it right there….on any random mutant….and let me zip out to the kitchen.” I returned to the mutant with my “Skinny Dr.” and popcorn. At least with that movie, I probably screamed the sodium out of my body.

24. Switch from white bread to wheat bread. White bread is packed with refined carbohydrates, which elevate blood-sugar levels.

25. Cut waaaaay back on saturated fat. Saturated fat is found in meat and dairy products. It’s claim to fame is increasing our risk for clogged arteries, heart disease, and cancer. I’d rather face a mutant. No, I wouldn’t.

26. Trans fat is another no-no. Most believe it to be even worse than saturated fat.

27. Processed food does nothing for us, either. 80 percent of our salt intake and tons of trans-fats come from processed and ready-made food. Our fast-paced, grab it and go world is anything but healthy, and the sooner we realize that, the healthier we’ll all be.

28. Don’t think you’re ever “too young” to start taking better care of yourself. There’s no such thing! Start today - eat right, exercise, unload unhealthy habits, get fresh air, see “The Hills Have Eyes,” drink lots of tea, and get plenty of rest.

Tomorrow: the 20 top fruits and vegetables for staying young.
