F.D. Van Amburgh Quotes

One of the hardest phrases to speak, in all of the English language, is actually composed of just two words. They aren't complex, complicated words. They aren't high-brow words - the kind that make life miserable for spelling bee contestants. They aren't difficult to pronounce. Truth be told, the whole prase itself consists of only three syllables. Yet I'm sorry seldomly rolls off the tongue. Rather it has to be coaxed and prodded to make an appearance at all.

Some people have a lot more trouble with the prase than others. For them, it's excruciating, so much so that most of the time they take the cowardly way out. They'll "glaze" over what they've done or said...change the subject and try to "get back to normal." It's their sincere hope to just put the incident behind them and never have to hear about it again.

The problem is, if they've wronged another person in any way - the fact that they don't apologize compounds the matter. The other person will always carry the injury, and without an apology, the injury will always have a footnote, "He/She didn't even apologize. They aren't even sorry."

On the other hand, if he/she had apologized, the other person would have dropped the injury and moved on. (Except for those bitter birds who carry grudges - then the onus is on them!)

Be sure, however, when apologizing you heed the wonderful advice of Kimberly Johnson, "Never ruin an apology with an excuse." An "I'm sorry but..." apology is just barely better than no apology at all.
