F.D. Van Amburgh Quotes

As with everything in life, there's a right way to argue and a wrong way to argue. Before even getting into an argument, of course, one should do everything possible to avoid it. If it's inevitable, however, there are right and wrong ways to go about arguing.

If you and another person can't see eye to eye on a matter, never attack their beliefs or opinions. They are, as you well know, as entitled to them as you are to your's. Let them know that you respect their opinon, just as you hope they'll respect your opinion. If you're respectful, chances are very good that they will be as well.

Keep a close eye on your facial expressions and body language during an argument. Eye-rolling, putting your hands on your hips, gesturing wildly with your arms, crossing your arms, looking off like you are disconnected - these are all disrespectful to the other person. None of them will help you get your point across, either. In fact, they'll pretty much ensure that you won't be listened to at all!

Finally, don't raise your voice. If your voice stays calm (but not in a sarcastic, monotone manner), their voice will probably stay calm as well. The wrong tone of voice causes a lot more arguments than the words that are actually said - or should I say yelled?!
