F.D. Van Amburgh Quotes

Fear gets a great deal of negative press. We're told to be brave, bold, and fearless... to let nothing get in our way, not even our own fears. Very good advice, all of it. In fact, you'll find that sort of encouragement and motiviation throughout this very website and blog!

But I'd like to take a different look at fear - an appreciative, positive look. (I think I just caught it off guard.)

Fear is not 100 percent negative. If you think about it in a positive light, it isn't even 50 percent negative. Fear is negative only when it causes us to stop what we're doing or stops us from even trying in the first place. But what if we started looking at fear as a Yield sign rather than a Stop sign? What if we identified it, not as red, but as yellow? Good old, "You're free to go, but use common sense and look before you leap" yellow.

There's a lot to be said for using both common sense and caution. Mishaps don't happen as frequently when we're being cautious. They usually come when we're charging off on our own, armed with enthusiasm but lacking an ounce of knowledge or caution. Use fear to your advantage and nothing will be able to stop you.
