A Novel Approach to Feeling Good

by joi on February 11, 2006

I was working on a post for Out of Bounds (my [tag]mental fitness[/tag] blog) when I came across a factoid that caught my eye.

I’ve always been a strong believer in learning new things, and doing so just as often as your psyche will tolerate it. Not only does it boost your confidence and self esteem, it also stimulates your brain cells – which is always, always, always a mighty good thing.  Now, it seems that there are even more benefits to tackling novel things in life.

A report written by an anthropologist at Rutger’s University (Helen Fisher, PhD) points out that learning something new boosts brain levels of dopamine, which increases feelings of pleasure.

The next time you’re faced with learning a new skill, say “My pleasure.” It really will be, you know.
