Ironically, I was mid-chomp on a shark sugar cookie when I got this information from Oceana in my e-mail. I say ironically because the sugar cookies I recently made were cut with their shark cookie cutter – the one i got when I adopted a shark (I even have the adoption certificate – too cool.). You’re pretty much aware of my love for all things covered in fur or feathers, but you should know that I’m just as fascinated and enthralled with sharks, dolphins, whales, manatees, and sea turtles.

I love Oceana for their commitment to these animals who they are also fascinated and enthralled with.

Oceana is more than just a place you can jump on board and get involved.  Yes, you could and should help the fight to protect our oceans and all of the magnificent animals they support. But Oceana also provides a wonderful education for yourself and your kids.

I’m a firm believer in, “A day spent without learning something is a day wasted.”  I’ve preached that to my daughters so much, they probably hear the words in their sleep.  The best part probably is that they know they aren’t just words to me – I live them. I study, research, and read daily about all of the different areas that interest me – such as oceans, history, and wildlife among other things.  Oceana is my favorite resource for information regarding the ocean and its residents. They stay on top of news that effects oceans the way I stay on top of chocolate.

This is something pretty cool:  In an inspired effort to get more knowledge out there, Oceana is having a quiz - and they’re offering  great prizes.

From Oceana:

Can you tell a heron from a herring, or an otter from an osprey? Test your knowledge of everything from sea squirts to polar bears with our Ocean IQ quiz. You can use the Explore section of our site as a resource, or for a real challenge, try answering all of the questions without peeking.

But wait, there’s more! After taking the quiz, you’ll have the chance to enter your name into a sweepstakes for the following aquatic prizes: a Nintendo Wii system with the Endless Ocean game, plus watches, gift certificates and rope bracelets from Nautica.

And what’s more, if you tell four of your friends about the quiz, you’ll be entered to win an eco-trip to get up close and personal with sea turtles in the wild!

Perfect scorers will also get their names etched in the Ocean IQ Hall of Fame on our web site.

Click HERE to take the quiz – I hope you win exactly what you want to win and, more importantly, I hope you fall completely in love with the concept of supporting our oceans and their beautiful, fascinating residents.  HURRY!  The quiz ends Friday.

Below are a couple of links I hope you’ll take the time to check out.  It’s all about the food we put into our bodies and how it can work for or against us.  It boils down to making smart choices and being proactive in the supermarket.  I guarantee (unless you answer to the name Dr. Oz) that’ll you’ll find information that you never knew – a couple of facts that’ll make you sit up and take note.

The first few links feature food expert Michael Pollan.  He researches food the way my husband researches golf.  All over it. His food rules has sparked a lot of conversations in my family.  Conversations about what foods we need to eat more of, less of, and what foods we vow to never buy again.   We long ago vowed to only purchase foods that are “cruelty free,” and I hope that’s something you’ll also commit to.  Mostly, I hope that you’ll take your health extremely seriously and eat foods that’ll promote a longer, healthier, and happier life.

A few of Michael Pollan’s food rules:

  • Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.
  • Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce.
  • Eat only foods that will eventually rot.  Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

Adopt a Polar Bear!

I recently wrote an article on my food blog about Oceana and their efforts to protect our oceans and the amazing animals who’s lives depend on them. Click HERE for the post and to see some of the world’s most gorgeous cookies! Oceana has an adopt a creature campaign going on right now and, frankly, I want to adopt one of each. You know me, so that doesn’t surprise you!

Oceana  allows you to “adopt” a particular animal of your choice (polar bear, whale, seal, penguin, shark, sea turtle, dolphin… ).  Depending upon your choice, you get an adoption certificate with a cookie cutter or a stuffed animal. It comes wrapped in a very nice box with a very beautiful sea-blue ribbon.

Can you imagine what beautiful Christmas gifts these adoption certificates, stuffed animals, and cookie cutters (including a great cookie recipe) would make?  This is the sort of thing that touches an animal-lovers heart like nothing else:  To know that you’re making a difference.

It doesn’t get any better!

I love this – tea and the environment in one post!

On one of the walls in our kitchen, I have an antique “hanging shelf” which actually includes 4 shelves. It’s filled with different boxes and canisters of tea:

  • Green tea – delicious and filled with antioxidants
  • White tea – also filled with antioxidants, white tea’s a little more subtle than green.  Celestial Seasonings Perfectly Pear White Tea is especially good.
  • Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion – as wonderful iced as it is hot.
  • Earl Grey Tea – This is probably my favorite black tea.  It’s the tea Starbucks uses for their addictive drink, London Fog.  When Starbucks is closed, I heat up a little skim milk, whisk it until it’s kind of foamy, and add it to a cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey Tea.  Heaven!
  • Celestial Seasonings Mint Green Tea – Oh man, this makes a perfect cup of tea.
  • Chamomile tea – if you ever have trouble sleeping, one cup of this tea will give you the best night’s sleep you could even imagine.
  • Echinacea tea- My family knows that I keep this tea on hand for the second anyone seems under the weather.   If anyone has a sore throat or cough, I add some honey and lemon juice.  We all swear by it.
  • Mandarin Orange Spice Tea – One of my husband’s favorites. It’s awesome.
  • Red Tea – This is one that I’m starting to fall hard for.  The first time I tried it, I wasn’t sure if I loved it or hated it!  It was intriguing enough to try again and I’ve actually grown very fond of it.
  • Candy Cane Lane – a Holiday Tea from Celestial Seasonings.  I was afraid that it’d disappear after Christmas, so I pretty much loaded up on  it.  It’s a Green Tea, and another way that Celestial Seasonings has made Green Tea great for the masses.  I wish I’d grabbed more of their Sugar Plum Spice Holiday tea.  I’m still kicking myself over that.

There are other teas as well, but these are the ones that come to mind.  One word about tea:  I recently stopped drinking caffeine after 6 pm.  I’m the biggest coffee and tea addict in the world, and caffeine’s a great, close friend.  However, my sleep was beginning to suffer, so I’ve started enjoying the heck out of cups of decaf tea in the evening.

I’m sleeping like an overweight housecat who just got her belly full.  But enough about Alexa.  Last night, I had a huge mug of Celestial Seasonings Mint Green tea and, get this, I blissfully slept right through what (I hear) was a heckuva storm!  We were expecing a storm last night – all the weather reports said to batten down the hatches.  This morning, I asked my daughter Stephany, “Did it not storm last night after all?”  Her eyes got huge and she said, “You slept through it?!?!”

Um, yeah.  Apparently the lights went out (meaning my beloved fan which I can’t sleep without also went out).  My husband even got up during it.  News to me. Wake me when it’s over. No, on second thought – don’t wake me, deep sleep is sweet.

Something else I love to great extremes? Tees! Being from Kentucky, I have an extra strong love affair with trees. We’ve lived in a lot of different states, and while they each had their own beauty – I always missed my beautiful green Kentucky and all of her horses, hills, farms, cardinals, Kentucky wildlife, and trees.

So I’m all kind of jazzed up about this “teas and trees” post!

Celestial Seasonings Gives Us A Cool Way to Make a Difference

Celestial Seasonings is smack in the middle of a tree planting program that I know you’ll want to get involved in. The Celestial Seasonings’ Trees for the Future partnership includes a virtual, sustainability-promoting, tree-planting program. It allows people to give back to an eco-friendly cause without paying a dime OR by simply buying a box of tea. Read what The Environmental Leader had to say about the program.

By simply purchasing tea or clicking on a mouse, Celestial Seasonings tea drinkers can support the planting of trees in developing countries and help promote environmental and economic sustainability around the world. The brand has partnered with non-profit organization Trees for the Future to support the planting of more than one million trees in developing countries. These trees promote economic and environmental sustainability in nations where it is desperately needed.

Tea drinkers can take part in two fun and affordable ways: by purchasing the brand’s all-natural teas between now and March 31, 2009, and by visiting www.celestialseasonings.com/trees, where they are given the opportunity to participate in a free, interactive, Web program that turns “virtual trees” into reality.

The online program was developed to further engage tea drinkers and make the tree planting experience more tangible. This site also gives consumers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the sustainability efforts of Celestial Seasonings and Trees for the Future. Celestial Seasonings earth-friendly approach to making tea includes a focus on sustainable harvests, ethical trade practices and minimal packaging, which saves more than 3.5 million pounds of waste from entering landfills annually.

The Press Release:
Celestial Seasonings® Asks Tea Drinkers to Make a Difference by Planting “Virtual Trees” Online

The specialty tea leader partners with Trees for the Future to plant more than one million trees in developing countries around the globe.

BOULDER, Colo.— February 3, 2009 —By simply purchasing tea or clicking on a mouse, Celestial Seasonings® tea drinkers can support the planting of trees in developing countries and help promote environmental and economic sustainability around the world.

Celestial Seasonings will sponsor the planting of more than one million trees through a new partnership with the nonprofit organization Trees for the Future. Tea drinkers can join Celestial Seasonings in planting trees in two ways: by purchasing the brand’s all-natural teas between now and March 31, 2009, and by visiting www.celestialseasonings.com/trees, where they are given the opportunity to participate in a free interactive program that turns “virtual trees” into reality.

“Our tree-planting program is a fun, affordable way for Celestial Seasonings tea drinkers to make a difference during trying economic times,” said Peter Burns, General Manager of Celestial Seasonings. “With the help of our valued consumers and the like-minded environmental stewards at Trees for the Future, we will sponsor the planting of more than one million trees and help promote sustainability worldwide.”

Online visitors to www.celestialseasonings.com/trees can plant a tree in a virtual forest generated entirely by fellow users. For each virtual tree planted, Celestial Seasonings will sponsor the planting of one real tree in a developing country by Trees for the Future. The online experience enables visitors to view the growing virtual forest of trees and watch their own tree sprout and grow. Users also discover how trees benefit the environment and economies of emerging nations by improving the quality of their water, air and soil, promoting biodiversity and generating additional income.

Visitors also learn about the brand’s earth-friendly practices, including the growing, harvesting and sourcing of their ingredients and the packaging of their products. Because they have worked with many of the same farmers for more than 30 years, the specialty tea leader has been able to establish sustainable harvests and support ethical trade practices. Additionally, Celestial Seasonings’ use of minimal packaging, including a unique tea bag that requires no strings, tags, staples or individual wrappers, saves more than 3.5 million pounds of waste from entering landfills annually.

Since 1988, Trees for the Future has planted more than 70 million trees in Central America, Africa and Asia – helping thousands of communities improve their livelihoods and their environment. These newly planted trees remove approximately 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.

Below is a tip that was in one of my recent green newsletters:

The next time you want to save trash from landing in the garbage can, think of fun uses for it. Save all those plastic bottle tops in a big jar and transform them into colorful bracelets, charms or pins decorated with glitter, tiny toy trinkets or vintage fabrics. Reuse metal cans and mint tins to display and store your favorite magnets. Save candy wrappers and chip bags for making collages and whimsical jewelry.

Oscar the Grouch knows trash is beautiful. When my girls were really young (back when Sesame Street was “can’t miss” tv, fish sticks were gourmet, and I knew absolutely everything) we made a couple of big “Craft Boxes.” They were actually boxes that a Gateway Computer came in, so they were already cool looking.

Inside the boxes, we put the regular suspects – glue, safe scissors, construction paper, glitter, etc. But the funnest part was finding unexpected things that’d serve a purpose. These were things that we would normally throw out. They even got their grandparents involved and noted that their grandmother, in particular, came up with some fascinating trash.

She was a school nurse and worked in the board of education offices. So, she was able to recycle the trash they’d normally throw out by bringing it to three little artists and their cow boxes.

Even though my girls haven’t seen Sesame Street in ages and I’ve somehow lost my ability to know everything – they still love to make things. So, yes, we still have a craft box in the house. They love the idea of making jewelry and cool things to set around in their rooms. I’ve always thought that the creativity sparked by finding uses for castoffs was great for all of us.

Our cats also benefit from the recycling mindset. Our most playful cat, Alexa, has a couple of toy baskets with play pretties (an adorable phrase my mother in law used for toys) and some of her favorites are actually recycled trash. You know the little containers of icing that come with cinnamon rolls? The little silver discs on top of the plastic bowls send her into a frenzy of delight! She had one all over the kitchen floor this morning. She wore herself out and is sound asleep beside me.

Naturally, you want to always be sure that anything you recycle can’t hurt your baby, whether it has fur or not. One of my babies was (and is!) a “Brittany,” so I always had to be extra, extra careful. You know the routine of asking yourself, “What would a child do with this? How could they conceivably hurt themselves? Could he/she choke?” I’d do this routine for my daughters Emily and Stephany – then I’d have to go through an extra one for Britt: “What would Brittany do with this? What weapon of mass destruction could Brittany create with this? Could Brittany replace one of her eyeballs with this? Would Brittany attempt a surgical procedure on a sibling, pet, or grandparent with these…”

You’ve heard of children who color outside of the lines? Brittany  never saw lines, just opportunities!  I don’t know where she got that from… I just…  What?  Oh yeah.

Anyway, always be very careful – even children who try to stay within the lines are still children and will flirt with the edges.  Nothing small enough to go into the mouth, nothing that could go around a neck, nothing that looks as though it’s begging to go into an outlet, nothing that has lead paint, nothing that could be sawed down and used to demand the contents of another child’s candy dish… don’t judge my child…. nothing that could cause harm, etc.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

Recycle Logo In every corner of the world, one thing’s for certain: All the cool kids are recycling. So if you aren’t on the bandwagon, yet, take a step back, then run forward and propel yourself upward!

Why Recycle?
The benefits of recycling are major and far reaching. Recycling saves, preserves, and reduces.

Recycling saves energy, land space, money, and habitats for wildlife.

Recycling reduces air pollution, reduces water pollution, and the need for landfills.

Recycling preserves homes for animals, trees for birds, nature for our children, and …well… the world as we know it.

Recycling reduces trash in landfill sites, which cuts down on the cost of waste disposal and the clearing of more land for new landfills when the current landfills become too full to store any more waste. Recycling is an easy and less expensive alternative to clearing more land for new landfills. For example, composting, recycling kitchen waste and yard waste into compost provides a means of free nutritious soil for gardening. In addition, most waste is not biodegradable. Its stays in the landfills for years to come, just sitting there and piling up with the rest of the trash. Recycling would allow us to reuse the materials over and over again. – About My Planet

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
During the early years in our marriage, my husband was in the Air Force. I was a full time mother, which I apparently enjoyed immensely because I had three beautiful daughters within 5 years. Needless to say, money wasn’t exactly plentiful. But you know what, I don’t recall ever carrying! Anyway, I read something around that time that became my household motto: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

Due to the economy not being in the best of moods lately AND a great, profound desire to save the world – I pulled the motto down from a shelf in the closet and dusted it off. We’re all approaching life with this motto firmly leading the way. It’s actually fun to find ways to recycle and reuse products. The entire family’s getting involved and it feels better than I can even say.

To know that you’re doing your part to make the world a better place for humans, animals, and plants is one of the most rewarding and beautiful feelings imaginable.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways you can help slow climate change and global warming. By recycling at home, you help significantly lower carbon emissions associated with extracting virgin materials, manufacturing products and waste disposal. – National Recycling Coalition

We reuse the plastic bags from the grocery store in the following ways:

  • We line the smaller trash cans (like the ones in the bathrooms and home office) with them.
  • I used them as a sort of “bubble wrap” when packing away Christmas decoration.
  • I just found a store that actually recycles the plastic bags, so I’ll be taking most of them to their drop box.
  • Dog owners often carry them with them while walking their dogs – as a place to put the pooch’s poo.

We reuse paper in the following ways:

  • We recycle our newspapers – after getting every ounce of good from them that we can.  Every article’s read, every recipe snipped, every crossword puzzle worked, etc.
  • I use junk mail to write my grocery lists on and often make my daily to do lists on old envelopes or junk mail.
  • When I was homeschooling my girls, we used junk mail (and print outs that were no longer needed) as scratch paper.
  • We use old Christmas cards to make gift cards the following year.  And I don’t even want to tell you how many times we reuse gift bags!
  • I only buy wall calendars that have pictures I’ll later use.  I have several framed pictures on the wall that look like art prints, but in reality – they’re simply calendar pictures that I waxed creative with.  One of my favorites is a black and white picture of James Dean.  And (clears throat) as you can imagine, I have a never ending supply of polar bear pictures.
  • The inside of toilet roll paper can be recycled.
  • Take old magazines to rest homes, Goodwill, doctor’s offices, dentists, etc.

Needless to say, everyone should be saving and recycling aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and newspapers.  Invest in Polar Bears are love. large bins and make it a routine to fill them up.  The main benefit is the wonderful feeling you’ll get when you realize that you are making a colossal difference, but many places will also pay you for your trash.  Check with recycling centers near you.  It isn’t, I assume, huge money, but every little bit helps, right? Especially if you set aside a certain designation for the money you earn – extra Christmas money,  Summer vacation, saving for a colorful new  living room sectional couch with plush cushions (three guesses what I’m aiming for), etc.

If you do a little research, you can even find some truly amazing products that have been made from recycling castoffs.  For example, check out these brilliant recycled tire mats and find a host of amazing recycled, repurposed products on MSN’s Shop Green Pages. I want Lois the Ladybug in the worst possible way.

What are some of the ways you’re reusing and recycling?   Let us know in the comments – I’m always eager to learn new ideas.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!

Embroidered Dolls from Zimbabwe

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I want these precious dolls from Zimbabwe. The only problem is, I’m pretty certain I’d never set them down. They’re from eBay’s World of Good.com? They aren’t just too cute for my mind to get around, these dolls have an amazing story to tell.

From the Website:

Made by members of the Batsiranai Craft Project, a cooperative of mothers with disabled children living in Dzivarasekwa township in Zimbabwe. Batsiranai is an income generation cooperative, a support group of mothers and families of disabled children but even more so is a vehicle to empower women in the region. For every doll purchased, Global Exchange will donate its twin doll to a needy child in Zimbabwe. So this very doll now has a twin living with a deserving child in Zimbabwe.

Now that would even melt the Grinch’s tiny little heart. Imagine: Giving a precious doll to someone special (who you love) gives a precious doll to someone special (who you’ll never even meet).

I urge (if it’d do any good to beg, I’d go there) you to look around World of Good.com and see what all they have. If you’re wanting to make an impact at Christmas, not only in the lives of the people on your list but around the world as well – this is the place for you.

Touching as many people as possible – it doesn’t get any better than that.

More about World of Good.com:

WorldofGood.com by eBay is the world’s first online marketplace to convene thousands of People Positive and Eco Positive sellers and products all in one place, empowering you to shop in ways that align with your personal values. Respected, independent organizations verify the positive impact every product has on people and the planet. Our goal is to ensure that every choice you make here is a good one.

When you read about the product you’re interested in, you’re told what good your purchase does. It’s called “Your Purchase Impact” – and brings home the truth we’ve known all along, “It feels good to do the right thing.”

When you visit World of Good.com, be sure you check out the following categories – they’re especially mind blowing!

  • Holiday – The ornaments, decorations, Nativity Scenes, etc. from around the world are so beautiful they can’t even be described. The Nativity Set at the top of the post was made in Kenya. Women use the dried fiber of the banana plant (something normally discarded) to make these pieces. Click the image to go to this particular page.
  • Fair Trade Coffee – You had to know that a coffee addict like myself would include this link.
  • Gift Baskets – Perfect Christmas gifts for everyone on your list. Each has heart, diversity, and a taste of the extraordinary. You won’t just look like a hero, you’ll be a hero. Tell me that’s not cool.

Why the Wind Blows Like a lot of you, I’ve been reading more and more about global warming. Quite frankly, it’s something I’ve had trouble getting my mind completely around (Maybe because my mind doesn’t really want to make the trip?). So I’ve been researching and reading and reading and researching.

After all, how in the name of all that’s polar am I going to save my dear Polar Bears if I don’t know what I’m up against. Hmph.

I’ve found several resources that those of you who are also interested in the subject of global warming and the weather, in general. After reading Why the Wind Blows by Matthys Levy, I’ve become somewhat obsessed with the weather. I never knew it was so fascinating.

Below are links to informative sites and references, including Mr. Levy’s easy-to-understand book.

Mother Bird and Babies

My e-mail’s inbox has been an extremely exciting place lately. It seems that just about everyone has something on his or her mind.

I get a lot of e-mails requesting recipes (through my food blog), advice on caring for an older pet (from people who know we have a 8,548 year old cat named Prissy), and requests for particular articles, tips, etc.  If you’re one of the ones who e-mails me, keep it up!  I love, love, love hearing from you.  Even the man who suggested that coffee isn’t healthy.

I’m praying for you, sir.

I’ve gotten several e-mails lately dealing with Empty Nest Syndrome.   Thanks be to God I don’t have to deal with that one yet.  I actually have a very full nest and cherish every second.  Not only are all three of our daughters still at home – most of the time, their boyfriends are here as well.  With that many young people around, who needs television?  Talk about entertainment!

However, a few nights ago, I did get a little taste of it.  My husband and all three girls and sons-I-never-had were out.  One daughter was working, my husband was Wal-Marting, and the rest were exploring haunted houses in a nearby town.  The house was so frightfully quiet, my cats and I didn’t know what to do with ourselves.  I opted to clean, and the cats went the curl up and sleep route.

It occurs to me – I hate quiet. If I had a magic wand, I’d make our home filled with young people 24/7.

I know that if I hear from several people who are dealing with an issue, many more are out there dealing with the same problem.  So I thought I’d post my advice here – such as it is, in the humble hopes that maybe someone can find a little comfort or, at least, some coping advice they can put to use.

First of all, change how you think about the situation.

So many parents refer to this time as a “loss.”  It may sound extreme, and I’m sorry if it sounds harsh, but the only parent who can truly claim a “loss” is the parent who has lost a child.  If your child is living, you haven’t lost anything!  Admittedly, it’s a transition, a big one.  As I said, my girls are still at home, but I certainly feel the transition.  As they grow older, you’re no longer the center of their world.  That certainly wouldn’t be normal, would it?!  I don’t have ready “co-pilots” for trips to the store or McDonald’s like I once did.  The trip’s a solo flight most of the time.  I haven’t LOST my girls, though.  I know where they are!

Life is full of transitions – and usually they’re transitions we’re certain (at the time) that we’ll never weather.  Moving away from home and dealing with homesickness, losing a house, saying goodbye to a loved one, etc.  Somehow, we come through transitions time after time.  The trick is to keep plowing along and to fight.  Never give in to emotions or lose yourself in a sea of sadness.

Don’t get me wrong, you’ll have sad moments.  That’s perfectly understandable and you needn’t apologize for your feelings to anyone.  Mothers have emotions that no one on earth can even come close to understanding.

We also have a little nastiness known as hormones – and, as luck would have it, right around the time it hits us that our babies aren’t completely babies anymore is the time our hormones aren’t completely reasonable anymore. They don’t exactly lessen the blow, do they? In fact, they cause each blow to feel 12 times worse. Not. Good.

Add to that the fact that around this time, a lot of us are dealing with troubling situations with our own parents. For those fortunate enough to still have their parents living, whole new sets of concerns can arise.

An individual doesn’t have a midlife crisis – midlife is a crisis!

To get a “feel” for what many parents go through during this transitional time, I’ve researched message boards, blogs, mazazine articles, and, frankly, my own inbox.  It didn’t take long to realize that the first thing parents need to do is change the way they look at it.  I read so many comments like, “It doesn’t get better…” and “I just keep waiting for the phone to ring..” etc.

Oh, snap!

It will get better if you allow it to – and watching for the phone to ring isn’t a good example of allowing it to.  That’s a good example of wallowing.  Knock it right off.

What you want to do is to create an environment where your child(ren) will want to come back and visit.  You DON’T want to create an environment of guilt trips and sadness.  They’ll avoid that like a teenaged boy avoids bathtime. Be happy, be encouraging, be upbeat.  Be someone they’ll want to be around, not someone they feel like they HAVE to be around.

Stop thinking of anything as “empty,” whether it’s your house, car, or life.  If we dwell on negative words and thoughts, we’ll only be making ourselves miserable.  Empty is a negative word – replace it with “peaceful,” “calm,” or “relaxed.”  MAKE yourself bury the negative thoughts in the back yard and vow to never dig them up again.

Second of All, Examine How You View Life

Don’t make your children (or spouse for that matter) your only reason for being alive.  If you do, then you just may be right when you say it’ll never get better.  If you don’t have any interests outside of your children, you’ll want to take care of that before the day’s out!   Below are just a few ideas:

  • Start a personal blog.  Not only does it give you a creative outlet, it’s a cool way to let others know what you’re up to.  Blogger.com gives you all you need to start blogging within an hour of hitting their site.   Personally, I wouldn’t advise using Blogger.com for a business blog, but for a personal blog?  Why not?
  • Buy a pet!  Cats, dogs, birds, etc. – they’re nothing if not babies.  They’re also a great, great deal of company, enjoyment, entertainment, and an endless source of love.
  • Redecorate your home. Use your extra time and money to totally re-do at least one room of your home.
  • Take a vacation. Grab a camera and take off for someplace you’ve always wanted to see.
  • Read more. Choose a great author (my own favorites are Dean Koontz, Agatha Christie, Nicholas Sparks, William Shakespeare, John Grisham..) and make it your mission to read every book they’ve written.
  • Become a Collector.  Begin collecting antiques, jewelry, dishes.. Whatever interests you.  It’s a great deal of fun to hit up antique shops, thrift stores and even yard sales.  I’ve been a collector practically all my life – cookbooks, brass candlesticks, coffee mugs, books, dvds, antique dishes, Liberty Falls houses and figurines, bracelets, earrings, purses…  It turns everything from ebay to weekend excursions into treasure hunts.
  • Watch movies!  This is just a fun suggestion – you won’t benefit in any way, I suppose, except for having a good time.  Like the author suggestion, above, I’ve always liked to take a certain actor or actress and watch everything they’ve been in.  At my husband’s choosing, we’ve been watching everything Vin Diesel lately.  They’ve actually been fun.
  • Begin a healthy routine.   Start exercising with dvds, walking at the mall, playing tennis, walking your dog, etc.  You’ll be doing something healthy for yourself plus activity releases endorphines, those delicious little feel good vibes that make you happy to be alive.
  • Take up cooking. It’s one of my own favorite things to do in the world.  There’s nothing like going to the grocery store, loading up on ingredients, bringing them home, and making great things happen in the kitchen.  Of course, it’s all the sweeter if you throw in a Starbucks trip between the reaping and sowing.
  • Ask for a little help. During the early part of the transition, be frankly honest with your spouse and other people in your life.  Tell them that you fully expect to be a “pill” for a month or two and would greatly appreciate a little help with keeping a smile in place.  Your spouse could make a special point of coming home for lunch more often – or maybe meeting you for lunch.

Realize that You’re Still Loved and Needed More Than Ever Before!

To realize this, you need to do little more than think back to when you left home. You missed your parents terribly and probably even felt closer to them than ever before. I know it was true for me. I came to look forward to visits with my mom and dad more than ever.

Thinking back will also cause you to realize you needed them more than ever before as well. I constantly needed something from them – whether it was advice on pruning roses, making gravy without lumps, or what in thunder to do with a corned beef my new husband had just brought home, I burned up the phone lines! I can remember “hearing” their smiles each time I called with another emergency.

I so totally understand that now.

Finally, Look Beyond Your Nest and Make a Difference.

I saved this one for last, because I think it’s the most important.  Not only will it help YOU the most, it’ll benefit others who are truly, truly in a bad place. We all know that there are people and animals in the world who are suffering. Do a little research and find a cause and organization that really speaks to your heart.

Below are a few closest to my own heart:

I don’t mind, and I’ve never minded, being looked upon as someone who thinks they can save the world.  Tree Hugger? Fine.  Mrs. Do-Gooder?  Whatever.   When you look outside of your own window and see all that needs to be done, you’ll leave yourself with little time to feel anything but determined and busy!

Never, ever think of your home as “empty.”  Think of it as “full” – full of love, full of fun, full of laughs, and full of comfort.  Create an environment that everyone wants to come home to.  If you dwell on the negatives, that won’t exactly draw them in, will it?

Keep the pot of coffee on standby, cookies in the cookie jar, throw pillows on the couch, and a smile on your face.

You’ll have more smiling faces around you than you’ll know what to do with!

The surest way to make yourself happy is to make others happy.  There’s a special kind of magic in helping someone else, even if you simply put a smile on their face.   Bringing happiness to other people causes you to forget entirely about your own problems.  Everyone’s a winner!
