Crawling Off Of the Couch

by joi on April 5, 2006

While working on a post for Office Freaks, I came across the following gem.  It’s from “Get a Life Without Sacrificing Your Career,” by Dianna Booher:

Bonuses come upon the completion of projects.  Signed contracts come at the end of negotiations.  Points go on the scoreboard only when the runner crosses the goal line.  One thing completed is worth ten things on hold.  Incomplete tasks can make you feel depressed and wasted; you will feel energized after completing them.

It really hit me where I’ve been living lately, which is pretty much on the couch with my favorite blanket, a big cup of coffee.  My blanket and I are surrounded by incomleted tasks, unfinished business and things waiting to be done.  Boxes are against the wall unpacked, “Thank You” cards are stacked up in neat little piles waiting to be personalized and mailed, plants are hinting that they’d like very much to be watered and planted, blogs are waiting to be revived, websites are waiting to be dusted off, and the laundry - let’s not even venture into the laundry room!

The incompletes in life zap your energy and leave you feeling overwhelmed and under-motivated.  It’s as though there are so many things waiting for you that you don’t know where to begin.  Unfortunately, this is the point where most of us decide to not begin at all.  “I don’t know where to start, so I just won’t.”  Back to the couch.

Today is the day I get off the couch and begin living again.  My coffee cup and I are back at the computer desk and we even made a trip into the laundry room.  Wasn’t pretty, but it will be in a few hours.  I’ve written down my TO-DO LIST (believe me, it’s earned the right to be in all caps) and I actually feel almost human again.  One of my biggest motivators is knowing how awesome it’ll feel tonight when everything’s crossed off.

THEN I can go to the couch - just in time for American Idol’s result show.  Pulling for my faves (Chris Daughtry, Ace Young, Mandisa, Bucky and Kellie Pickler), trying to figure out what’s up with Taylor’s wiring and watching Paula do her impersonation of Otis will be much more enjoyable without all of the incompletes standing between me and the television.

It’s a beautiful day here in the ‘boro - I hope it’s even more beautiful where you are.  Enjoy it like you’ve never enjoyed a day before.
