Elderberry vs. Influenza

by joi on February 6, 2006

The elderberry plant is a real beauty, with creamy white flowers and purple berries.  It’s a shrub found in Europe, northern Africa, and Asia.  It’s looks aren’t what make it blogworthy, though.

The elderberry plant’s juice has antiviral properties that we can use to our advantage.  It’s even dubbed “The medicine chest of the common people.“  The plant’s medicinal use has a very prestigious lineage:  Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Piny the Elder all documented elderberry and its remedies.  Apparently its use has long been known to ease colds and sinus problems.

New research shows that elderberry brings about “pronounced improvements” in individuals suffering from the flu.  (And anyone who has had the honor of having the flu knows why I put suffering in bold font.  I mean, there’s suffering, and then there’s suffering!)

The elderberry seems to prevent the influenza bug from latching on to cells.  Also, the elderberry’s anthocyanins (found in purple fruits) seem to have an antiinflammatory effect comparable to aspirin.  This would explain why taking it eases achiness, pain, and fever.
