FlaxUSA - Stober Farms

By 2011, expect to see flaxseed in products all over the grocery store.  Food manufacturers are rushing to include flaxseed in cereals, pancake mix, breads, mayonnaise, and more.  Experts, nutritionists, and consumers are opening their eyes to the beauty of flaxseed.

Flaxseed offers more nutritional punch that other grains.  Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, high in both s0luble and insoluble fiber, protein, B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese, flaxseed is a powerhouse food.  It’s Vin Diesel in a cannister!

Flaxseed, when ground or milled, can be added to everyday food without altering the flavor.  If anything, you’ll detect a little bit of a nutty flavor – one of my favorite flavors on the flavor wheel.  I’ve sprinkled Flax Sprinkles on oatmeal, cereals, pasta salad, and muffins.  I”ve added it to homemade bread batter, pancake batter, and even scrambled eggs.  In fact, just a few minutes ago, I had some vanilla Stonyfield yogurt with a cut up apple.  I sprikled the flax sprinkles on top and had a snack that was as nutritious as it was delicious.

“Flaxseed, like other sources of soluble fiber, has been reported to lower cholesterol (particularly LDL), curb appetite, help keep blood sugar stable, and encourage weight management.  Flax’s most notable ingredient is its lignans.  These fibrous compounds are powerful antioxidants that are metabolized by bacteria in the colon into substances that may possess anti-microbial and anti-cancer properties.  Flax is the richest source of lignans, providing up to 75 times the amount found in other lignan-containing foods.” – Jen Allbritton, Certified Nutritionist

FlaxUSA and Stober Farms Flaxseed Products

My favorite sourse of Flax Sprinkles is FlaxUSA.  For over 100 years, John and Stephanie Stober’s family has been growing the finest flax in the world from their fifth generation family farm.  Flax grows about two feet tall with pale blue flowers.  Reportedly, driving past the Stober’s farms looks like an ocean of blue blooms!
