Martin Luther King Jr – A Hero Amongst Heroes

by joi on January 19, 2009

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. – Martin Luther King, Jr

Today, as we reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr, think about all the things that this man was up against. The fight didn’t make him bitter.. it made him better. He could have played it safe, couldn’t he? He could have stayed at home, safe and sound with his beautiful family. No doubt, he would have lived a lot longer. But he was more interested in standing up for what he knew was right. The world’s a better place because Martin Luther King, Jr fought back and did so in the right way.

My husband and I were watching a movie a few weeks ago where one of the characters was talking about heroes. She said that heroes only appear when the world needs them the most. My first thoughts were Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Jr, Abraham Lincoln, and Harriet Tubman. Then just as these names proved the character’s sentiments in the best possible way, my mind turned to yet another name.

Hope clings to the thought that he’ll also prove himself in the best possible way. I for one believe he will.

The name was Barack Obama and he’s about to get his chance.

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. ~

I wish him the best but have to honestly say my expectations are modest. Government isn’t a one-man operation. I don’t believe the influence of major corporations on congress is going to allow for substantial change on any of the big issues like global warming or health care.

I expect that at most Obama has a chance of getting legislation passed to address the current economic crisis, but it will have to be written in a way that continues to favor big business with minimal oversight and regulation or it will never pass.

Paul,
I think you echo the sentiments of the majority of people. What I’m most afraid of is that the public’s understandable love for this man might backfire on him. He has so much work in front of him and people are expecting so much from him. I just hope the expectations aren’t too high and that everyone will give him time to bring about the change he wants to bring about.

I also hope they’ll give his beautiful family room to breathe! I’m especially worried about the little girls. I hope they don’t have cameras in their faces 24/7.
