Go Confidently in the Direction of Your Dreams…

Henry David Thoreau's Beautiful GPS

Inspirational Quote

When it comes to inspirational quotes and verbal kicks in the seat of the pants, Henry David Thoreau is one of the best.  I thought he’d be perfect for today’s quote of the day.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. - Henry David Thoreau

A little tip about inspirational and motivational quotes. When you find one that strikes a chord with you.. right where the chord needs to be struck… write it down and put it in plain sight.  It’s a funny thing about quotes – sometimes one that sets a fire beneath us does zip for then next person.  Someone once told me a quote that had changed their life. I can’t even remember what it was, per se, but it was a Chinese proverb – that much I remember.  I also remember them looking at my face, waiting for my light bulb reaction.

Not so much as a flicker.

I just thought, “Seriously? That set you on fire?

I have several quotes written on index cards hanging on the cork board above my computer in my home office. One, by Lady Maya Angelou always spurs me on: “Nothing will work unless you do.”  I’m not sure why, but these words always flip a switch for me.

Browse through the motivational quotes on Self Help Daily and find the ones that flip your switch – then print them onto index cards and place them accordingly.  After all, like light switches in a room, our emotional switches need to be flipped on daily… otherwise we’ll be sitting in the dark looking like perfect fools.

Beautiful Quote about Life by Agatha Christie

No Mystery About It...

Bird in the Sky, Kentucky

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. – Agatha Christie

I love this Agatha Christie quote.  Not only did the lady write the greatest mysteries the world has ever known (as her #1 fan, I may be a bit biased), she also had a great handle on life. Life is beautiful, even on the worst of days. Some people say they feel more alive than ever when they’re in the middle of a battle, while others claim the period just after a battle is the sweetest.

Personally? I feel more alive when things are calm and normal.  When chaos ensues, I’m the proverbial chicken with its head cut off – running in circles, clucking, and looking a perfect fool. This girl wasn’t built for chaos.  I’ll give chaos this, however, it does make lazy, calm, beautiful days like today feel thisclose to Heaven.

Quote for When You’re Feeling Down

It'll Get You Back on Your Feet and in Fighting Form!

Flowers on Kentucky Dam Village Golf Course

Anger, tears, and sadness are only for those who have given up. – Katie Gill

The last time I was feeling, as my mom used to say, down in the dumps, I threw myself across my bed and started reading through one of my quote collections. I have millions of trusty quotes pretty much within reach at all times. Notebooks, computer, ipod, books, memory…

One of the first quotes I came to was the one above.  It was an immediate, and most welcome, kick in the backside.

I honestly cannot even remember what led me to drape across my bed that day (couldn’t have been too bad) but I do remember how I felt after reading the quote.  The old fighting spirit kicked in and the same body that flung itself down sprang back up again, ready for action.  It was just the motivation and inspiration I needed at that time.  In fact, I’ve saved it on my memory’s hard drive for the next time I need a little jolt.

One of the things I pride myself on the most is the fact that I am not a quitter.  I’ve been blessed with a life that has, quite often actually, felt closer to a roller coaster than a Merry-go-round.  If anyone questions my choice of the word blessed, I’d simply ask them which ride they’d rather ride at the state fair!  Life’s ups, downs, and unexpected dives are the places we learn to fight.  These are the times we learn if we are quitters or if the very word quit repulses us.

I’m horrified by the concept of “giving up,” so this quote holds a lot of magic for me – that and a swift little kick.

Are you feeling a little down in the dumps or disappointed about something? If so, read the words again and see if they have the same effect on your backside. Anger, tears, and sadness are only for those who have given up.

Call it a Pretty Fact or a Poetic Truth…

Calling it a Quote Doesn't Seem Good Enough

Relax

“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.” – William S. Burroughs

The quote above is so completely true that it shouldn’t even be called a quote – it should be called poetic truth or a pretty fact. Every answer we seek is right there within reach. Well within reach, in fact! The answers to our questions are inside us, waiting to be uncovered.

The problem is, we get so busy Googling, asking other people for their opinion, and running around like drunk squirrels that we fail to hear the quiet voice inside.  If only our inner voice had a megaphone, maybe we’d hear it FIRST instead of LAST sometimes.

The next time you find yourself wondering about “this” or in a bind over “that,” here are three steps that can help  you find your way:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Relax.
  • Listen to you gut.

If you still have trouble hearing or uncovering the answer, here’s a trick I’ve relied on nearly as long as I’ve relied on coffee:  Imagine that someone you love has the problem you have. Imagine that they’ve come to you…. and that they’re as confused or perplexed as you are now.  What would your advice to THEM be?

From where I sit, this advice would be your absolute best because that’s what we always give to those we love. You’ll be amazed at how obvious (and golden) the advice often is.
