If you go to the moview even half as often as I do, you’ll be interested in the results of a study conducted on theater popcorn.
Here’s my usual routine: I buy a large tub of popcorn, a box of M&M’s and a diet coke (don’t laugh…. I hear you snickering). Then I pour the M&M’s into the buttered popcorn and settle in for the trailers (I SO love trailers!) and movie.
Maybe I should say that was my routine, until I read exactly how many calories I was ingesting.
The non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) compared some popcorn and drink combinations to consuming three McDonald’s quarter-pounders topped with 12 pats of butter. What?!?!
A medium popcorn and soda combo at Regal, the United States’ biggest movie theater chain, contained 1,610 calories and around 60 grams of saturated fat.
At AMC theaters, the second largest theater chain, a large popcorn contained 1,030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat, equivalent at a pound of baby back spare ribs topped with a scoop of luxury ice cream, CSPI said. Talk about a tear jerker.
In a somewhat-related subject, if you haven’t seen The Blind Side yet – what in the world are you waiting for? This is a very heart-warming, touching movie that also happens to be very funny and a lot of fun. Sandra Bullock has always been one of my favorite actresses, and she did me proud. She was outstanding – as was the rest of the cast. Five stars from me and my husband… and a few of the stars were tear-stained, if not popcorn butter stained.
I opted for chocolate-covered raisins this time.
Watch The Blind Side!

I have been doing everything to lose weight but it is not working. I now realize why. I go to 3 movies a week and always order the large popcorn with butter. I can´t go without. I suppose I´ll continue my life fat but happy

Tim. LOL! I’ve been to the movies twice since finding out how many calories are in the delicious stuff – the first time, I ate chocolate covered raisins instead of popcorn. The second time (last night), if the line hadn’t been so long (thanks to New Moon!), I’m pretty sure I would have caved in and gotten my beloved popcorn and sprinkled M&Ms in it. My willpower isn’t too impressive, I’m afraid, when it comes to certain foods. I always just think, “I’ll walk it off tomorrow!” – Joi
