Thursday Throwback: Constructive Thoughts and Ideals

February 18, 2010 by Joi Leave a Comment

Self Help Articles

It is better to talk of health, progress, happiness, and success, than of the contrary things.  It is better to think of the beautiful, truthful, inspiring, and ideal, than the opposite thoughts.  It is better to be cheerful, confident, expectant, and enthusiastic than to indulge in destructive feelings.  Knowing this, the right course is clearly open to you.  Fill your daily life so full of constructive thoughts and ideals, that there will be no room for negative and depressing ideas.  Confine your conversation to helpful, useful, encouraging subjects.  Be generous in thought, word, act, and purpose.  Make the world better for your being in it.  Take a strong stand for truth and righteousness, and make every day count toward your eternal progress and happiness. – Grenville Kleiser, 1917

As Grenville Kleiser so eloquently stated in 1917, one of the keys to happiness is positive thought.  Your outlook, your countenance, your mood, your relationships….. your entire life can be positively affected  if you’ll make a practice of holding your thoughts accountable for themselves.  Over the next few days, keep a conscious ear tuned into your thoughts.  What do you spend the most time thinking about?  Are these thoughts constructive or destructive?  Do these thoughts make you happy to be alive and grateful for all that you have? Do they leave you feeling good about yourself?  What effect do your thoughts have on your mood?  Do your thoughts cause you to feel discouraged, sad, angry, bitter, or resentful?

Think about it this way:  When we give our body a healthy diet of food that’s good for it, it rewards us by feeling good and operating the way it should.  When we overeat or mistreat our bodies with a diet of junk food and things that aren’t healthy, we feel sluggish, out of sorts, and often have to run to the store for Pepto Bismol.  Our mind and our emotions operate on the same type of system – our thoughts are the food that fuel them, for better or worse.

Give it a try.  Over the coming days, force yourself to concentrate on MORE positive thoughts and fewer negative thoughts. When a negative thought creeps in, overpower it with a positive one.  If your mind says, “I can’t possibly do this…”  Turn the tables on it an replace the thought with, “I can’t possibly fail!”

I’ll tell you what will happen:

  • You’ll smile more.
  • You’ll feel happier.
  • You’ll feel more fulfilled.
  • You’ll have more confidence.
  • People will be drawn to you.
  • Nothing will seem impossible to you.

If that sounds like something you can live with, get started right now.  Conjure up an incredibly positive and uplifting thought and stamp it across your brain. Think about the people, animals, places, and things that make you smile.  Think about how grateful you are for each of them.  Think about your positive traits and how thankful you are to possess them.  Think about how bright your future is and how amazing the rest of 2010 is going to be.

It’s all good, right?  Baseball season, grilling out, flower beds, and bird watching are all just around the corner.  What’s not to smile about?!

Turning Your Upside Down World Right Side Up!

February 17, 2010 by Joi 2 Comments

I just finished reading a book by Deb Scott, The Sky is Green and the Grass is Blue: Turning your upside down world right side up!.  There were so many things I loved about this book – from the author’s infectious positive and fun-to-read style to the catchy title – a title that starts the reader off on a journey to discover what the author has in mind.  As an avid book reader who always has more books that she wants to read than time in which to read them, I love something else about this book – something that I’ve started embracing books for having: Large enough text for me to lie the book on the front of my treadmill and read as I trudge along.  Big bonus!  I actually finished this wonderful book this afternoon while getting in my daily exercise on my treadmill.

There is great power in the now. Give up the hope of a better past, and start focusing your time and energy on a better present moment, right now. – Page 15, The Sky is Green and The Grass is Blue.

I’d categorize this book under the following categories:

  • Spiritual
  • Self Help
  • Self Improvement
  • Inspirational
  • Motivational
  • Recovery
  • A Book that Makes You Glad to Be Alive!

That last category?  Just made it up – Just for this book.   When I finish reading a book, I ask myself what my initial opinion of the book is.  After the standard, “Like it, love it, or eh -so-so,” I always have a few summarizing thoughts about the book, the author, or the way the book left me feeling.  After reading The Sky is Green and the Grass is Blue: Turning your upside down world right side up!, I thought, and subsequently wrote down, the following:  “This book was like a walk through an inspirational and spiritual garden.  There were so many lovely thoughts, quotes, stories, and illustrations along the way – just like beautiful flowers along a garden’s path.  I kept stopping to pick one and could see one just ahead – from the first page of the book to the last.”

I share a lot of books with you, my friends who also happen to be my readers.  If I got something out of a book, I want at least the same for you.  But it can be tricky.  I don’t want the article to come across as a book review, per se.  My goal for Self Help Daily is for you to truly get something out of every single post – whether it’s a dose of inspiration, a blast of motivation, something to think about over the course of the day, or even a good (loving) kick in the butt (speaking of which, put down that soft drink).    All of this means, I like to share something with you from the book that’ll give you food for thought for your day and, hopefully, your life.  However, in fairness to the author – I never want to give too much away.

Generally, I just approach it like I do everything else in life – I let my heart be my guide. So, here goes!

As I said, The Sky is Green and the Grass is Blue: Turning your upside down world right side up! is filled with insightful, wonderful gems. Some of these are quotes, some are examples, and some are stories. However, the majority of these gems are the author’s own lovely thoughts and views of life. Deb Scott has lived a full life and seen her share of troubles and triumphs. It’s because of this view that she’s able to write such a thought-provoking and inspirational book.

We may not be able to control the direction of the wind, but we can always adjust the direction of our sails. – Deb Scott

It seems to me that this book is written, primarily, with the individual in mind who has been in a battle or who is currently on the battle lines. Even though neither description fits me, personally (for which I thank God profusely), I did get a great, great deal from this author and this book. I can only imagine what someone who has suffered any sort of abuse or addiction would take away from this book. I have an idea that it’d be this: A new life.

I’m not even remotely exaggerating.

Deb Scott has battled a demon (alcohol) that many face but only the strong defeat. She also battled an abusive relationship. I love that she didn’t just find her way out of the darkness… she’s going back for others who haven’t found their way out yet.

The Sky is Green and the Grass is Blue: Turning your upside down world right side up! can serve as a beautiful guide and companion to those who are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. Make no mistake about it, it’s there and Deb Scott can be your guide.

I want to hasten to add, however, that even those of us who have been ridiculously blessed – having never been mistreated by anyone and who can claim coffee or chocolate as the only addictions they’ve ever had – can, and will, benefit from this book and author.

We magnify what we focus on. – Deb Scott

Here’s an example. Deb Scott points out, beautifully, a truth that I have always felt strongly about: The more we focus on something, the larger we make it. We actually end up magnifying what we want most to diminish! If you keep focusing on a small habit or trait of a loved on… keep thinking about it…. keep talking about it…. keep obsessing over it… it will become so large that you won’t be able to stand being in the same room with it. That’s why it is so important to focus on positive things in life and positive traits in people.

Think about it, our thoughts fill the room that we happen to be in. Do you really want to be filled with negativity, criticisms, and pet peeves? Hadn’t you rather be surrounded by love, laughter, positive thoughts, and positive energy?

The next time you begin to zero in on insignificant, petty little habits or idiosyncrasies of someone, switch your frequency. Think about his sense of humor – how he always makes you laugh. Or think about her sweet nature – how she wouldn’t hurt anything or anyone, even if they struck first.

Instead of thinking about your “small” house, think about how “cozy” it is! Instead of thinking about all the work you have to do, think about how blessed you are to have a job and the health with which to do it. Instead of criticizing yourself for being overweight, focus on how young you look, your beautiful hair, or your eyes that your friends envy so.

Fill your thoughts and fill your world with positive energy and show negativity the back door. There’s no doubt in my mind that I come across as Mary Poppins sometimes. It’s a fact I don’t just live with, I actually embrace. And it’s something that isn’t reserved for my writings or blogs – I’m this way in the kitchen, in the store, while vacuuming, in the laundry room, working in my yard… and so on. I simply think any time spent generating negative energy is a waste of time and an insult to God. It’s also not fair to people around you – the ones you spew it all over!

My husband and I had a funny talk last night at supper. He was talking about a guy he has golfed with before. He said he wasn’t his favorite golfing buddy because he was so negative. Then he told a story about a guy he likes to golf with. This guy isn’t as good of a golfer as the other guy, but he apparently thinks he’s the next Tiger Woods. He’ll hit a so-so shot or even a bad one, then look at my husband and say, “Wow. I couldn’t have hit that one any better!”

I love this guy!

Remember, we can’t unscramble the scrambled eggs. But we can come up with delightful new recipes to serve and enjoy them. – Deb Scott, Page 39, The Sky is Green and The Grass is Blue

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I promise that you’ll find plenty of beautiful flowers to cut and enjoy along the garden’s path.

Leave the Soft Drinks on the Shelves. Put the Tea Bags in the Cart!

February 17, 2010 by Joi 3 Comments

A new study has found that even drinking just two soft drinks a week can increase your risk of pancreatic cancer. As a former soft drink addict, I know that two soft drinks is usually a daily thing for most people.  At the height of my soft drink fanaticism, I easily drank an entire 2 liter of Dr. Pepper over the course of a day.  Easily.  Then, when I switched to Diet Dr. Pepper, I served it with the same dedication and devotion.  Who am I kidding, I still have a soft spot for my beloved DDP.  Fortunately,  I love tea, iced coffee, and green tea even more, so I’m slowly but surely pulling away from the habit.

The new study that’s generating all the buzz has greatly affected what drinks I bring into my house. Researchers say that drinking as little as two soft drinks a week appears to nearly double the risk of getting pancreatic cancer. Scary stuff.

”People who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87% increased risk — or nearly twice the risk — of pancreatic cancer compared to individuals consuming no soft drinks,” says study lead author Noel T. Mueller, MPH, a research associate at the Cancer Control Program at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. The study is published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

If your kids (or your spouse!) seem to think that the only thing they can drink are soft drinks, introduce them to different fruit juices, teas, and flavored water. As a green mom, I really don’t want to recommend bottled flavored water.  Instead, buy a water filter – turning your own water into bottled water.  Then, flavor it – if need be – with lemons, limes, strawberries, blueberries, Stevia or Truvia, peaches, etc.  I confess, I drink what my daughters call “hummingbird water” – I sweeten it with Truvia or Stevia.  I guess it’s all those years of drinking soft drinks and sweet tea (very, very sweet tea – I take my southern heritage seriously).

If you, or anyone in your family, misses the “fizz” in soft drinks – try adding a little club soda to juice.  It’ll give you the fizz without the fright.

Personally, I’ve found that flavored tea bags have enough personality and taste to make you all but forget about soft drinks.  The Peach Celestial Seasonings tea bags (pictured above) make outstanding cups of hot tea and equally outstanding glasses of iced tea.  Remember, tea not only tastes wonderful, it has antioxidants to boot.

Everything good, nothing bad. Where can you beat it?  If you’re going to put something into your body, don’t you want it to be a worthwhile guest and benefit you in some way?  Make today the day you stop putting bad things in your body and start putting more good things in… and start with your drinks.

101 Most Motivational Presidential Quotes Of All Time

February 15, 2010 by Joi 15 Comments

This is where I get giddy.  I’m a history buff as well as a motivational quote addict, so  historical books fight notebooks filled with quotes for shelf space in our house.  I’m particularly fascinated with the American presidents and their first ladies.    We can be proud of the men and women who have served our country in the White House.  And, yes, I did say men AND women.. as the first ladies most definitely served their country and left behind their own legacies.

For President’s Day, I thought a collection of some of my favorite Presidential quotes would be fun.   Enjoy!

Random Acts of Kindness for Seniors

February 12, 2010 by Joi 7 Comments

If there’s one group of people that I feel nothing but love for it’s the elderly. I think they’re adorable in every sense of the word. What’s more, I think we could all learn a great deal from them – their experiences and their wisdom. If you are blessed enough to have parents and grandparents living who would be considered the “older” generation, I’ve got some of the best Self Help advice you’ll ever hear (and remarkably, it goes hand in loving hand with the guest article I posted earlier today!): Pull out all the wonderful information, stories, recipes (!!!), remembrances, and living history from your family members that your brain and heart can hold.

The beautiful thing is, you won’t have to pull hard. Parents, grandparents, older neighbors, co-workers, aunts, uncles, and friends love to talk and visit – we just often get so busy that we don’t take time to listen. This arrangement makes everyone a loser. You’ll make their day if you start visiting with them and listening to them regularly and, mark it down, you’ll be a better person for it.

I want to tell you about something today that’s truly beautiful.  Something that I hope you’ll take advantage of – not just for the good that you’ll give, but for the good you’ll receive.   As I told a friend through e-mail recently – there are certain things I believe in with all of my heart and soul: God’s love, the goodness of coffee and chocolate, the peacefulness of a cat on your lap, and the miracle of a child’s laughter. I told him that I believed in something else just as much: Karma. I believe know that we get out of life no more than we put into it. If we expect amazing things to happen to us, guess what: We have to be worthy!    Here’s a test for you to try:  Think of about 5 people.  Think of the ones who seem, more often than not, to just have it made – they have a good life, they’re happy, and even when things  go wrong – they seem to just kind of laugh through it.   Then think of the ones who never seem to catch a break – things seem to work against them more than for them and they seem to almost always be on the brink of a crisis of some sort.  Now think about the karma they’re generating with their lives.  More times than not, the first group generally loves people and would do anything for anyone, within their power – and sometimes outside of their power.  People, animals, birds, the earth – the first group genuinely just wants to make the world a better place for everyone. The second group?  Well, they’re the  Me, Myself, and I crowd.

And they pay dearly for it.

If you suspect that your karma needs a make over, below is your chance!  If your karma is already sweet… here’s a golden opportunity to sweeten it even further.  Coffee can never be too bold and karma can never be too sweet… that’s kind of Life 101 in my book.

Either way, I’d love for  you to visit Seniors For Living and learn more about Random Acts of Kindness Week.  They’re heading up an outstanding movement to generate random acts of kindness for seniors.  How beautiful is that?!?! Read their suggestions and jump in with both feet and a full heart.

My own personal suggestion?  Nothing matters as much as your time.  No one is so busy or so important that they can’t take at least an hour out of their day to visit with the people who need it the most and will appreciate it the deepest.  Before my grandmother got Alzheimer’s, she absolutely cherished our visits more than anything.  When my girls and I would go by to sit and talk with her, she would talk about it for days!  She’d say things like, “I told Juanita (amongst her other partners in crime!) that my girls came by today and we had a lovely visit…”  I’m sure you’ve had similar experiences.  They’re faces light up and their lives light up.

Now doesn’t that sound like something you’d like to see more of?

Random acts of kindness week is February 15-21.  Like most things, this kindness should start at home, then spread outward.  Read more at random acts of kindness for seniors.
