“I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” – Marilyn Monroe
I’m fascinated.. beyond fascinated, actually… with the Golden Age of Hollywood (one of my blogs that proves it). The clothes, the movies, the music, the relationships, and, most of all, the people. Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Lucille Ball, Marlon Brando, James Stewart…. All fascinating people to say the least.
The wonderful thing about Marilyn Monroe is that she had a lot of intelligence and wit beneath the beauty that made the world drop its collective jaw. Each time I read one of her quotes or interviews, I just sit there, transfixed.
Beauty, talent, intellect, and a biting sense of humor. I love to read about Marilyn Monroe, but I also hate to read about Marilyn Monroe. It’s just so insanely tragic that her demons took control and, ultimately, won the fight. If only uncommon strength had been amongst her many attributes.
Being a sex symbol is a heavy load to carry, especially when one is tired, hurt and bewildered.– Marilyn Monroe
I remember watching a few movies with Marilyn Monroe in them and one of the things that really surprised me was just how funny she was with her various characters. She was much more than looks for sure.
I love that first quote! We need to learn to accept people at their worst as well as at their best.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice tribute to Marilyn! She was truly beautiful, and smart, and sad. I loved ‘old Hollywood’, too; so classy back then. You never saw them anything less than regal, even in their downtime. Today, they look like the worse they can look, the better! Lol.
Hi Joi,
In this day of politics and political correctness it is refreshing to hear someone express the truth about themselves. I admire and respect this quality in someone.
Honestly, I’ve seen this quote a million times and NEVER liked it. It’s as if people say “I have all these bad character flaws, and I KNOW I have them. If you can’t deal with them, then you don’t deserve me during the (some) times I’m not exhibiting them.”
To which I always want to respond, “Good. Rather than celebrating your flaws, fix them. Why be content and proud of being impatient, and selfish, and insecure? Why would I want you at your best, if I have to deal with you at your worst?”
I am a big fan of Marilyn Monroe and her quotes. Joi did great work here I think. I remember,
“As I sat there dreaming, I knew there were other girls having the same dream of becoming a Hollywood star. Yet I knew I didn’t have to bother about them. I had to keep my focus. I was heading for the top.”
It inspire me every time.
