Opening Day of Baseball Calls for Quotes About Baseball

April 5, 2010 by Joi 2 Comments

Book links are usually affiliate links. This means I earn a small percentage when you click through and buy the book. This costs you nothing extra - it simply allows me to keep my cats in the lifestyle they're accustomed to.

Okay, I can’t really sew these quotes into any sort of a Self Help or Self Improvement quilt. Motivate? Inspire?  Doubtful.  Amuse?  Doubtless.

If you read any of my sites, follow me on Twitter, or converse with me through e-mail – you know how much I love baseball. To the ends of the world and back!  As an only child – I was all my dad had to share sports with.  He didn’t have a son and our cats and dogs were completely uninterested.  Baseball and UK basketball were a couple of areas in which we totally bonded.

Then, when I got married, I was lucky enough to find someone who loved baseball and UK basketball as much as we did.  I’m not sure my dad would have let me marry someone who wasn’t a sport’s fan.

Anyway, my beloved St. Louis Cardinals kick off their season today against the Reds.  And since this is our year (Mark it down!), I thought I’d celebrate and get us all in the mood with some of my favorite quotes about baseball.

I see great things in baseball. It’s our game – the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us. – Walt Whitman

Baseball is a fun game. It beats working for a living. – Phil Linz

When they start the game, they don’t yell, “Work ball.” They say, “Play ball.” – Willie Stargell

A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz. – Humphrey Bogart

All ballplayers should quit when it starts to feel as if all the baselines run uphill. – Babe Ruth

Above anything else, I hate to lose. – Jackie Robinson

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. – Rogers Hornsby

You gotta be a man to play baseball for a living, but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you, too. – Roy Campanella

How you played in yesterday’s game is all that counts. – Jackie Robinson

I never doubted my ability, but when you hear all your life you’re inferior, it makes you wonder if the other guys have something you’ve never seen before. If they do, I’m still looking for it. – Hank Aaron

There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem – once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit. – Al Gallagher

I’m hoping someday that some kid, black or white, will hit more home runs than myself. Whoever it is, I’d be pulling for him. – Hank Aaron

I thought it was going to hit the St. Louis arch. He’s the best hitter in baseball. You’ve got to give him a tip of the cap. I wanted to go high-five him. – Ian Snell (Pirates pitcher after giving up three homeruns to Albert Pujols, of the St. Louis Cardinals, in three at bats.)

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. – Earl Wilson

Back then, my idol was Bugs Bunny, because I saw a cartoon of him playing ball – you know, the one where he plays every position himself with nobody else on the field but him? Now that I think of it, Bugs is still my idol. You have to love a ballplayer like that. – Nomar Garciaparra

I don’t want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it. – Rogers Hornsby

When you’re in a slump, it’s almost as if you look out at the field and it’s one big glove. – Vance Law

Good pitching will beat good hitting any time, and vice versa. – Bob Veale

Every hitter likes fastballs, just like everybody likes ice cream. But you don’t like it when someone’s stuffing it into you by the gallon. That’s what it feels like when Nolan Ryan’s thrown balls by you. – Reggie Jackson

Trying to sneak a pitch past Hank Aaron is like trying to sneak a sunrise past a rooster. – Joe Adcock or Curt Simmons (attributed to both)

You don’t save a pitcher for tomorrow. Tomorrow it may rain. – Leo Durocher

God has blessed me and I will continue to do my best for Him. That is more important than anything I can do in Baseball. – Albert Pujols
With those who don’t give a damn about baseball, I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can’t think of anything to say to them. – Art Hill

For those of you who simply love the sport and are looking for new equipment, you can find baseball bats cheap by shopping online.

That was funny when you talked about your dad wanting you to marry someone who loves sports 🙂

I think this quote is quite funny… and true!!

Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer. ~Ted Williams

I have been waiting what seems forever for the season to finally start and I already have my fantasy team put together. I am just glad that I will not be running back and forth between the computer and TV to check my team’s stats. I have and work at DISH Network and now that I have the Sling adapter, my TV is combined with the internet and all its glory. During the breaks I can check the stats and not have to worry about missing any of the game.
