Ever Wonder Where the Term Eager Beavers Came From?
The beaver has such a stellar reputation for being such a little go-getter that he’s often associated with the word eager. We always hear the phrases “busy as a beaver” and “eager as a beaver,” but how did this modest little animal earn such high esteem?
He worked for it. Literally.
These too-cute-for-their-own-good animals are large rodents that work with a single-minded determination. Their business is apparent when you see the dams and lodges they build from fallen limbs and trees. From late summer all the way through the end of autumn, beavers prepare for winter.
Not only do they build their homes and dams, they gather and store branches for food. These guys eat bark on branches the way we eat corn on the cob, and few things are any cuter than watching one go about it.
Beavers use sticks, mud, and rocks to build their dams in a stream to form a pond. Then, inside their home (or lodge), beavers dig out a living space above the water line. Wood chips on the floor absorb moisture, and a vent lets in fresh air.
Even on the coldest night, the temperature inside a beaver lodge stays around 32 degrees.
Self protection is the best protection. Great say -John J. Watson Quote.
