Practicing Yoga to Reduce Stress (Plus a Few Yoga Poses to Try!)

September 26, 2019 by Joi Leave a Comment

Before I developed a hiatal hernia, one of my favorite things in the world was yoga. I would carve 30-45 minutes out of my day, 5 days a week, to enjoy a session. I used a Book by Raquel Welch to learn the poses and Raquel opened up the wonderful world of yoga for me.

Not only did I practice yoga in my “carved out” time, I’d also find myself doing the poses wherever I happened to be – in the kitchen while watching the stove, in the yard in between feeding cats and filling bird feeders, while watching old movies… anytime I wanted a great stretch!

Yoga isn’t just enjoyable, it’s extremely relaxing. Plus, learning new things is great for the mind.

While the infographic below is titled, “The Benefits of Yoga for Addiction Recovery” and while it would, I’m sure, be wonderful for those overcoming an addiction, make no mistake about it – yoga is beneficial for everyone.

Infographic: 12 Uses for Turmeric

June 16, 2018 by Joi Leave a Comment

Turmeric is one of my favorite spices to use in cooking – I actually loved it even before I discovered how healthy it is. While there are endless ways to “sneak” extra turmeric into your cooking and meals, my absolute favorite is with rice. I’ve never tried turmeric tea (as mentioned in the beautiful infographic below) but I’m making it a point to do so asap!

Get Your Brain Back on Track: 9 Ways to Focus a Wandering Mind (Infographic)

March 14, 2018 by Joi Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if it’s because, as an only child, I grew up spending A LOT of time daydreaming and jumping from one fun scenario to the next or if I’m simply bent toward the habit but I get mentally off track as easily as cheap aluminum foil gets off its track.

I can be in the middle of reading a book and, even if it’s a great book, find my mind suddenly in my flower bed making sure my zinnias aren’t giving my moss roses too much shade. By the same token, I can be in one of my flower beds thinking about something I’d read that morning.

This mind.. I swear… it is all over the place!

The following infographic has some really great tips on lassoing the wandering mind and pulling it back to where you need it to be.

Enjoy!

I love the concept of actually taking a minute to think about something different from what’s at hand… then getting right back on track. I actually did this this morning while reading – I paused between chapters and… you guessed it…. mentally planned one of my flower beds. Satisfied that it’d be both colorful and successful, I returned to my book and was able to give it my undivided attention.

Give these tips a try for yourself and let me know in the comments which is your favorite! Of course, if you have an entirely different method of your own, let us all know about it!

Top 12 Cancer Fighting Foods (Infographic)

February 22, 2018 by Joi Leave a Comment

So much time is spent talking about healthy foods…. super foods, even… that I’m afraid a lot of people are beginning to grow immune to the information. They see an article touting the benefits of spinach, blueberries, or walnuts and move along to the next article thinking, “I already know what foods are good for me and what foods aren’t!”

The problem is, most of us don’t know even 1/4th of what we think we know! In fact, each year NEW information comes out about the foods we “think” we know everything about. Oftentimes, this information is different from what we’ve read in the past. One food may be EVEN better for us than previously believed while another may not be quite as healthy as the reputation it once had.

Another reason to keep up to date on foods, vitamins, and minerals is this: if you have a particular disease and/or are on a particular medicine, new research may alert you to food(s) you need to avoid or food(s) you need to learn to love!

What I love most about healthy foods is the fact that they can actually help us keep from getting sick in the first place. Research shows the following foods can help prevent cancer, and while a few may be expected, a few others may surprise you. Enjoy the infographic and be sure to work as many of these delicious foods and drinks into your life as possible!

Infographic: Rising Levels of Anxiety in a Digital World

November 9, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

I was recently discussing anxiety with a family member who is a close, personal friend of the disorder. While she doesn’t experience the symptoms on a daily basis, the disorder is ever-present. Sort of like those of us with asthma – we may not have trouble breathing daily, but we are never free of the disease.

We simply manage it to the best of our abilities.

The thing that fascinates me the most about anxiety is that it used to be something you seldom heard about. I’ve often wondered, as many have, what has caused the obvious surge in anxiety disorders. Through reading a great deal about anxiety (when multiple people in your family suffer from a particular disorder, you pretty much make yourself an expert on the subject), I’ve found that this is a disorder that is FAR from a “one size fits all” situation. One person’s symptoms, in fact, may not even remotely resemble another person’s.

What’s more, the things that cause “flare ups” or even “attacks” greatly differ as well.

One of the things that works against individuals who have legitimate, clinical anxiety disorders is the frustrating fact that countless people are claiming that they have “anxiety disorders” when, in fact, they simply feel “anxious” at particular times or in particular situations.

When I had to give a speech in college, for example, I felt anxious – to the point of nearly feeling nauseous (I hate public speaking!). However, I don’t – nor did I then – have anxiety. I simply felt anxious because of the situation.

The fact that so many people take it upon themselves to say they have an anxiety disorder when they actually don’t does a disservice to the men and women who actually battle the disorder.

The infographic below gives a lot of insight into how our digital world can effect anxiety. It’s actually an angle I had never considered and it’s downright fascinating.

Diet can also play a role in anxiety disorders. I’ve read MANY, MANY accounts where cutting out gluten and sugar have greatly improved people’s symptoms.

When you live with a particular disease or disorder, it’s more than worth it to try any approach you can. After all, any relief is just that….. relief! – Joi (“Joy”)
