Christmas Joy: How to Make it Last All Year!

December 9, 2015 by Joi Leave a Comment

Quote About Christmas Spirit

The Joy You Give Others…

Ever since I was a “spoiled rotten” little girl, showered with doll babies from scads of adoring family members, I’ve always loved Christmas with every ounce of my being. Granted, the six year old me had a few different reasons for this than the adult version of me, but make no mistake about it, my excitement for the season today is every bit as strong as it was then.

I no longer associate Christmas solely with dolls, candy, Santa Claus, and Barbie doll furniture. Well, actually candy remains, because I never outgrew my sweet tooth, but you get the idea.

Somewhere along the way, Christmas became more about Joy, Happiness, Good Will, Excitement, and Love.  It’s a season where everyone seems happier and more eager to “give” than to “receive.”  Maybe the two go hand in hand.

In the quote above, that’s exactly what John Greenleaf Whittier is suggesting: “Somehow, not only for Christmas but all the long year through, the joy you give to others is the joy that comes back to you.”

What if this is the most magical, wonderful time of the year because we are more focused on giving joy to others than on bringing it to ourselves?  What if The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is actually more fact-based than we realize? If you’ll recall, the Grinch never found happiness until he stopped taking and started giving.

As a Self Help and Self Improvement blogger, my first thought is this: How do we take this extra special happiness and extend it from December to the rest of the year? How do we capture the joy of the Christmas season and make it shine brightly over every other season?

The answers actually lie within questions:

  1. Ask: What is our primary GOAL each Christmas? I can only speak personally, but mine is simple – to bring smiles to the faces I love the most. I want to see their faces light up when they open special gifts I’ve bought just for them. I want to see a return to childhood joy when they sort through their stockings. I want to blow them away with the Christmas meal, coconut cake, fudge, candy, and cookies. Told you, the sweet tooth is strong with this one. I also find myself more concerned with giving back during the holidays. Why is beyond me, but it’s more in the forefront of my thoughts this time of year more than any other.
  2. Ask: How often, during the rest of the year, do I focus most of my energy on making other people smile or bringing joy to others? Do I fall into a rut of focusing only on things that make me smile?
  3. Ask: What are special things I can do from January to November to bring smiles to others? What are ways I can go out of my way to show others how much I love them? What are things I can do to give back to others and help those who are unable to help themselves?

Making Christmas Joy last all year is as simple as asking the right questions.

Merry Christmas from my family to yours!

Quote of the Day: Kind Words are the Music of the World

September 11, 2014 by Joi 1 Comment

Inspirational Quote about Kindness

Kind words are the music of the world. They have a power that seems to be beyond natural causes, as though they were some angel’s song which had lost its way and come back to earth. – Anonymous

The Storm Will Pass. The Spring Will Come.

April 18, 2013 by Joi Leave a Comment

First Robin of Spring

Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in a low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come. – Robert H. Schuller

I thought of this great quote by Robert H. Schuller recently. Like everyone, I was growing a little anxious for spring to arrive. The cold days just seem to linger and linger and linger. To make matters worse, we kept getting little teases of warm weather. I’d put my cardigans and sweaters in the back of the closet, only to have to dig them back out when the temperatures would dive again.

Don’t get me wrong, I love winter. But she just about overstayed her welcome this year!

When I saw the first robin of spring (something we bird lovers always watch for), I thought about this wonderful quote.

The spring will come. It always does.

When we lose loved ones, we can’t even imagine EVER smiling again, let alone laughing. Yet, after a while, we do both. When we’re in the throes of a stomach flu or sinusitis, we can’t even remember what it’s like to feel good.  And, yet, when we DO feel better, we’re convinced that it’s the best we’ve ever felt in our life!

The spring will come. It always does.

If you’re going through a difficult time right now – whether it’s related to health, grief, relationship problems, or one of life’s other monstrosities – keep reminding yourself that it won’t always be like this. Better, brighter, happier days are ahead.  Storms never last forever and, very often, they leave a beautiful rainbow in their wake.

The spring will come. It always does!

Inspirational Quote of the Day: Don’t Take it Personally!

January 11, 2013 by Joi Leave a Comment

Alexa

Don’t Take Anything Personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. – Miguel Angel Ruiz

How could I have gone through my entire life of being full on obsessed with inspirational quotes and not come across the one above before?

I even collect quotes!

This wonderful quotation is a perfect reminder to take everything others say or do with a grain of salt. NEVER let others define you or direct your world. There are people in the world who delight in trying to do both.

Live your life on your own terms, be the best you that you can be (as defined by YOU, not someone else), and never look in someone else’s mirror to see your own reflection.

As you know, I often tell you to write certain quotes down.  This time I’m ordering you to!  This one’s a life changer.

Quote of the Day: You Are Not Lonely

November 3, 2012 by Joi 1 Comment

Beautiful Sky

…So do not be lonely. You are just alone. It is like saying you are old. I am not old; I’m just older. –  Anna

I pull my quotes of the day from a great number of places. 8 times out of 10 they’re quotes I’ve recently read, thought about, or recently “called on” for inspiration or motivation.  Today’s quote of the day is a rare bird: It’s taken from a comment left here on Self Help Daily.

The comment was left on a post about Overcoming Loneliness, but that’s not even remotely important compared to the comment, itself – or more importantly the author of the comment.  Anna has been a widow for a year.  When I read that – at the first of her comment – my heart sank.  I thought, “Bless her heart…” (we Kentuckians are always blessing someone’s heart).  Then after I read a little more, I realized, this is one very special lady and simply refuses to hand over her joy to life’s circumstances.

Her words, her demeanor, her grace, and her spirit touched me and I wanted to pass it along.

To read her entire comment, go to the post, scroll down to the comments, and look for Anna.  You’re going to love her.
