“Wouldn’t it be fun if all the castles in the air which we make could come true, and we could live in them?” – From Little Women
When I began putting these quotes together, I debated with myself what to title the post: castles in the sky, castles in the air, or castles in the clouds. We’re all familiar with the beautiful and even precious concept: of having such golden dreams and aspirations that they sometimes feel like a castle in the _____ (insert sky, clouds, or air!). Personally, for whatever reasons, I have always referred to them as castles in the clouds. Am I the only one? When I rounded up a few quotes, I noticed that no one else seemed to refer to them in this manner.
Maybe my head is in the clouds!
But that’s the subject for another debate. I was stumped, so I asked my beautiful daughter Brittany which of these sayings she used. Without hesitation, and with a mouthful of Snickers with Almonds, she answered, “Castles in the sky.” As you can see from the title above, “mom” puts the world of trust in her candy-loving daughter.
Quotes About Castles in the Sky:
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. – Henry David Thoreau
Why should we strive, with cynic frown, to knock their fairy castles down? – Eliza Cook
A sigh can shatter a castle in the air. – William R. Alger
By degrees the castles are built. – Irish Proverb
Wishing is good for us. Daydreams, fantasies, castles in the air, and aspirations all drive us forward, impel us to make things happen. – Unknown
I’m curious, which of these three sayings do YOU use. Answer in the comments!

I like the first one by Henry David Thoreau. The way I read it is that it’s quite okay to dream about big goals but don’t just leave them as dreams. Instead, put some feasible plans together to work towards making those dreams happen, i.e., the foundations.
