4 Powerful Self Development Tools To Transform Your Life

July 12, 2022 by Joi Leave a Comment

Positive Affirmations Graphic

by Alicia Obrien

Self-development shouldn’t just be a dream but an achievable goal. There’s always room to improve oneself so you can become an even better version of who you used to be. No matter what aspect of your life you want to work on, the most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to go through it alone. There are so many tools that can help you make self-development a more attainable.

Indeed, like everyone else, you, too, envision yourself climbing up the ladder of life. The zest to be a better person than you previously were is there, and now it’s time to finally put that into action.

Becoming your best self is always within reach, especially with these tools to help you out.

  1. Positive Affirmations

By now, you’re perhaps already aware of how powerful the mind truly is. It’s not just used to think and to do certain things; your mind also has power over your thoughts and emotions. Often, you’ll have a higher chance of achieving something if your mind thinks and believes that you can do it.

This is the power of positive affirmations. It’s an easily understandable phrase, as it literally means flooding your mind with positive affirmations about yourself. For example, there’s that big job opening you really want to take for your career and personal growth. If you don’t believe you can do it, give your mind positive affirmations such as ‘Yes, I can do it,’ ‘Yes, I’m worthy,’ or ‘Yes, this job is for me.’ By continually telling yourself you’re capable, you’re more likely to achieve your goal without fear.

Another good practice is to look at yourself in the mirror when you say those affirmations. You can do this right before bed to cast away negative thoughts. Alternatively, you can also do it in the morning to give yourself more confidence before you start the day.

  1. Mobile Applications

Technology is truly a valuable resource to take advantage of. Smartphones are becoming the norm, and that means downloading mobile applications is something you probably do quite often as well. The good news is that you can include a list of self-development apps on your list of to-download, and there’s plenty to choose from.

The good thing about these apps is they can open you up to a whole variety of resources. Do you want to wake up every day with personal development quotes to inspire you? That’s possible. You can also go read short inspirational stories and watch related clips if you want to.

Now you can finally make better use of your free time by using it to browse through your self-development apps. Doing so is a better than spending hours on social media, where you may only wind up feeling more jealous about the seemingly perfect lives of others.

  1. Binaural Beats

If you love music, then this one’s for you. There’s such a thing known as binaural beats or sound frequency patterns that can be used for concentrating or relaxing. There are many varieties that you can listen to depending on what will best suit your needs.

Here are examples of frequency patterns and what they’re commonly used for:

  • Alpha for relaxation
  • Beta for concentration
  • Delta for a dreamless sleep
  • Theta for the REM phase, creativity, and meditation

These binaural beats are also great to play around your home or in your room. You can instantly transform any area into a zen space with music to match the ambiance.

  1. Journals

Those thoughts you’ve been keeping in your mind need a place outside of your brain. That place is your journal. Journaling can assist your personal development techniques as it helps you organize your thoughts and ease your anxiety.

You can think of writing in a journal as akin to talking to yourself. There may be dreams and aspirations in your life that you may be too shy to talk about to anyone, so why not write them down? Journals aren’t just for writers; anyone can have one. On the days when you feel down, you can always go back to your journal of personal notes.

If you’re going through counseling or life coaching, then your journal will also be a must-have. Sometimes, your life coach may write certain things down for you. Or there might be lessons learned from each session that you want to remember. Those notes are, even by themselves, extremely powerful tools.

Final Thoughts

In closing, do remember that personal development is a life-long process. Moreover, it’s not something that simply happens overnight. You must consistently work on developing a better self as you grow and go through different seasons in life. Whether on your own or with a counselor and life coach, self-development is attainable when you have the right tools to help you. It’s not yet too late to start with the help of those above. That personal itch is there, and now it’s time to take action.

One of the Best Approaches to Habits… Coax Them Down the Stairs (Advice from Mark Twain)

January 5, 2022 by Joi Leave a Comment

Quote About Habits by Mark Twain

“Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.” ~  Mark Twain

This is one of my favorite quotes about habits and it isn’t very surprising that it’s from one of the brightest minds to ever live, Mark Twain. Anyone who has ever tried to break a bad habit (let me tell you, I have a French fry habit that may just be my companion for life!) knows that it’s impossible to simply throw it out with the trash. I mean, you could try but it will almost always find its way back into your home.

Homing pigeons should return to roost as well as bad habits!

Not only should each individual bad habit be coaxed slowly and methodically out the door, we should always try to remember to deal with one bad habit (and/or implementing a new good habit) at a time. I think that’s why New Years Resolutions often fail. We aim at too many targets… forgetting we have but one arrow.

I wish you the best of luck in making and breaking any habits you have in your sights. You look perfect to me but if you have any you want to make or any you want to break, I wish you all the best. Take them one at a time, be patient with yourself, and when you cave in and have an order of fries at Culver’s, don’t beat yourself up. You can have the coleslaw NEXT time! (Sorry, that last one was for me.)

~ Joi (“Joy”)

P.S. Anyone else craving Culver’s now??

The Secret to (LASTING) Change: Quote of the Day by Socrates

December 30, 2021 by Joi Leave a Comment

Quote About the Secret to Change by Socrates

Quote Graphic About Change

What better time to focus our thoughts and energy on change than New Years Eve?! The thing I always try to tell myself is that I’m looking for “lasting” change instead of just change. I mean, I can MAKE myself drink more water for a day… possibly even a week, but what good does that actually do?

What I’m looking for is a way to make drinking more water an automatic part of my daily live. It’s the only way it’ll last. I’d know, after all, it’s been a resolution and goal for as long as I can remember! This year I’m trying to focus on BUILDING a habit of drinking 8 oz of water between my cups of coffee and glasses of raspberry tea.

It’s honestly my only hope I believe! That, and, another trick: By knowing myself and all of my funny quirks, I think I can work the quirks to my advantage. I love pretty and whimsical things and am just completely drawn to them. I have my favorite coffee cups, tea glasses, and travel mugs and happily use them daily. I associate each with the goodness they hold!

I’ve decided to buy myself the most charming, fun, and whimsically delicious water bottle on Amazon (Amazon link to water bottles) and keep it with me (refilling it throughout the day). I’ve found a few in my favorite color (purple). There’s also a VERY cool, soft and collapsible one (Amazon link) that can be fastened to a belt buckle for when I’m walking or working in the yard.

Socrates said,  “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” and I plan to carry this quote with me through all of 2022. It may be a helpful companion to you as well!

Best of luck with all of your resolutions and goals and have a very safe and happy New Year! ~ Joi (“Joy”)

Try Something New Every Day: You Never Know Where Your “Amelia” is Hiding!

October 20, 2021 by Joi Leave a Comment

Try Something New Every Day GraphicTry Something New Every Day!

Think of a hobby or pastime you love to do – one that brings you great joy. Something you look forward to doing and feel on top of the world while doing it! Maybe it’s watching baseball on tv, cooking, gardening, walking, hiking, collecting Pyrex dishes, watching old movies, golfing, or burning it up on the tennis courts.

Whatever that something special is, it’s such a part of your life it almost feels like recess from the real world!

I’ve always been of the mind that the more interests you have, the more interesting life will be and the cool thing is, the opportunities for new interests are limitless. You can start a new hobby, find a new pastime, or adopt a brand new subject to learn about.

I remember about 12 years ago , I saw an Amelia Earhart special on the History Channel. An interest was greatly sparked and I went down an Amelia Earhart rabbit hole that has led to collecting every article, book, and collectible I can that has anything to do with her! I love looking for new specials about the iconic legend and have even began reading about other aviators (particularly women). On the flip side, there have been other individuals on the History Channel I have followed up on by studying more that didn’t spark any further interest, but there have been more people and subjects who have stuck around and greatly enriched my life.

You just never know when or where you’ll find your Amelia!

Have a great day and, as always, make each moment count double!
