How to Get More Done in the Morning!

August 3, 2021 by Joi Leave a Comment

Morning Cat and Coffee

What My Mornings Look Like: Cats and Coffee!

About two years ago… after months of looking for more time in the day and being unable to uncover any… I decided to simply start getting up 30 minutes earlier. After a few months of seeing that, not only was getting up before 6:30 am not fatal, it was downright productive.

I was blown away by what the humble little 30 minutes added to my day. It suddenly seemed as though the day wasn’t sneaking up on me as much as I was sneaking up on it. 30 minutes may not seem like much at all, but when you uncover extra time to be used as you choose, it’s a gift.

Guess what. I got greedy.

I saw that this extra 30 minutes meant I could ease my way into my morning and, when ready to get busy, I was more of a mind to do so. Over the course of a few months, I thought of other things that could be accomplished by another 30 minutes. Greedy… yes… but also ingenious because it has meant the world to my morning routine and daily routine.

I get up at 5:30 each morning and ease my way into the day. Having extra time to sit, drink my coffee, talk about sports with my husband, and do my morning devotions and Bible reading starts the day off on a beautiful note instead of a sour note. Bonus to a better morning and better day…. you’ll sleep better at night!

The infographic below gives a lot of wonderful tips for making your mornings more productive. Starting the day off with less stress means you have less stress to carry around with you throughout the day.

Ingenious.

Stay well, stay safe… stay happy!

Healing Aromatherapy Scents and How to Use Them

June 15, 2019 by Joi Leave a Comment

Healing Aromatherapy Scents

As I’ve said before, I am a new Essential Oils fanatic but I’ve been a huge fan (and very active user) of aromatherapy for years. The first two scents that made me a believer in the wonders of aromatherapy were opposite ends of the spectrum: Lavender and Orange. I found that one helped wind me down when I needed a little help with the process and the other helped wake me up… again, when I needed a little help with the process.

As in every morning!

Over the years, I’ve, personally, found the following  to be very useful:

  • Peppermint: Perfect for snapping out of a mental fog – there’s just something about the aroma that keeps you mentally alert. Maybe that’s the REAL reason mint gum and mints are so popular – they give a little wake-up call similar to caffeine. Anyone who suffers from drowsiness while driving could probably benefit from mint car fresheners. I’ve found that the aroma of peppermint also alleviates mild headaches. I have NO idea why, but it often works for me.
  • Eucalyptus: As you’d expect, this one is great for congestion. This past winter, whenever I had a cold, I did what my youngest daughter suggested: I put a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil in the bottom of the tub before taking a warm shower.  Heavenly! I’ve never done it, but how relaxing would lavender essential oil be used in this same manner?!
  • Lemon: Similar to Orange and Mint, Lemon is a wonderful eye-opener and mood-lifter.

Whether you use Essential Oils, candles, diffusers, tea (yum!), or lotions, aromatherapy holds the key to many wonders. The infographic below can help open a whole new world!

12 Surprising Ways Clutter is Ruining Your Life

May 22, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

Have you ever cleared out an area of your house, car, or garage and felt instantly lighter, happier, and freer?! It never fails, when we buckle down and get rid of extra clutter, we automatically feel better. The act of sorting through things and hauling them off isn’t, itself, always a joy… but the effects certainly are!

I work from home and, for whatever reasons, my office works pace gets cluttered faster than a 16 year old boy’s car. Or room… or locker… As an avid reader who’s always in the middle of at least 4 books, there are (understandably) mountains of books everywhere you look. I hoard pens… my own as well as my family member’s… so there are overcrowded pen holders on my desk AND shelves.

I’m forever cutting out newspaper and magazine articles when doing research for one of my 8 blogs and naturally there are at least 5 bottles of nail polish in the vicinity of all times.

Whenever things get too cluttery (one of my favorite made-up words), I honestly have trouble concentrating. I find myself looking at the mess and thinking..

  • What is it with me and pens anyway??
  • Ooooh, that’s a great shade of pink… I need to do my nails…
  • I can’t believe Emily (oldest daughter) found me this adorable little Hawk Girl figurine.
  • Why isn’t there a Hawk Girl movie for crying out loud?
  • Wonder if Michael misses his pens yet.
  • This “World’s Best Mom” plaque from Brittany is just too sweet…
  • Ha! The fat cat figurine from Steph cracks me up… I need to re-situate him, he’s crooked.
  • Why is re-situate a hyphened word, why not just allow it to be resituate?
  • What IS it with me and pens…

You know, everything BUT work that needs to be done. Clutter is like that. It’s ridiculously distracting. But there’s actually more to it than that. It doesn’t just look bad… it IS bad.

The last thing any of us want or need in our life is extra stress, yet that’s what clutter brings into our lives – bonus stress.

The great infographic below will tell you just how much damage clutter is doing to you – inside as well as outside. While you’re enjoying the infographic, I’m going to clean out my pen holders.

Yes… all four of them. They’re starting to annoy Hawk Girl.

Infographic: How Dogs Improve Your Health!

April 8, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

I am a bona fide animal-lover if there ever was one. I’m pretty sure you could tell from all the pictures of animals on Self Help Daily or in my Twitter timeline, but I thought I’d write it out loud just in case.

Left to my own devices, I’d have at least two of every animal known to man, but my cats (and husband, for that matter) don’t share my off-the-hook enthusiasm. What’s more, we are, primarily, a cat family. We are blessed to live out of the city, so we’re able to take in cats who need a forever home, a forever family, and all the love they can stand.

How much are we committed to these cats? Well, for one thing, forfeited our entire carport to house a couple of (heated in the winter, of course) cat houses, cat food stations, chairs, and toys… lots of cat toys. Their set-up is ridiculously sweet. At any rate, this is the only reason I don’t have a dog, or two, or twenty. Dogs are amazing, loyal, beautiful, sweet, intelligent…. but woefully an enemy of our cat family.

Dogs aren’t just wonderful and loving family members, they’re actually very healthy for you. Just one of the ways I’ve found this to be true has been with dogs I’ve had and loved in the past (before the cats took over our hearts and yard!). Over the years, I have, without question, walked more frequently (and for longer periods of time) when I’ve had a canine companion. They love it so much, you just don’t want to stop their fun!

The great infographic below tells more ways dogs are actually very healthy for you. As for my opinion on the matter – I think that dogs (like cats) add to your joy and happiness – and that, fellow-animal lovers, is a key component of having a healthy and worthwhile life.

If you are able, I wholeheartedly suggest heading to your local shelter and allowing a RESCUE to take place. Just be warned, it won’t be the dog (or cat) that’s rescued!

Nursing Shortage Expected to Get Worse in the Next 5 Years

January 11, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

Maryville University Online
According to a recent infographic by Maryville University Online Nurse Practitioner Programs, there are expected to be over 20% more nursing positions up for grabs in the next five years.  There were just under 2,725,000 registered nurses in the United States in 2012, however many of them are now coming up to retirement age.  On top of this, because of the amount of people soon to be entering into retirement in the US, more nurses will be needed to ensure everyone is cared for adequately.

Although this is good news for those interested in nursing careers, it is worrying for the country if these positions cannot be filled.  The US really needs to start enticing young people to enter the healthcare industry if the nursing shortage problem is to be successfully solved.

You can find out more about the figures we have discussed in the Nursing By The Numbers infographic below.
